Kauri are iconic New Zealand native trees known for their massive size and towering presence. Young trees grow in a narrow cone shape before developing huge spreading crowns that rise above the forest canopy. Their flaky bark helps protect them from vines and parasites, while their tough leathery leaves and wind-dispersed seeds allow them to thrive for centuries. Kauri can grow up to 50 metres tall with enormous trunks over 5 metres wide, making them among the largest trees in the world. Ancient giants once dominated northern New Zealand forests, with some legendary specimens reaching incredible sizes before being lost to fire and storms.
